Put yourself in their shoes. In 1720 France was just coming out of a long war that had left the nation on the edge of bankruptcy. People were starving to death and plagues were sweeping the country. The rich were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer.

Pierre & Marie Mayeux were newlyweds who left behind everything in order to build a new life in French Louisiana. Little did they know the difficult and terrifying path that lay before them.

1729 is their story, and the story of hundreds like them who came to a new world with new hope, only to have it dashed and broken time after time. This is the tale of their journey across the Atlantic, enduring a year in plague-ridden Biloxi, making their way 600 miles up the Mississippi River, surviving one of the worst massacres in American history, living in the newly founded swamp village of New Orleans, and finally raising a family in South Louisiana.

Today there are a million living descendants of Pierre and Marie Mayeux. But there almost were none.

1729 The True Story of Pierre Marie Mayeux the Natchez Massacre and the Settlement of French Louisiana eBook Kenneth Myers

I really enjoy Louisiana history, and knowing that this book offered a look into my husband's family history, made it an easy purchase for me. I really enjoyed Kenneth's story-telling style. So much so, that I really wished our middle school history books were written this way. Student's would enjoy history and not see it as "information about dead people" as teachers are often told. Students today have no idea how hard life was back then -- we're talking life or death hard. It never crosses their mind due to modern conveniences and technological advancements that we have today. For example, one can imagine that one would have to cross the ocean to get from France to Louisiana, but students have no idea what that trip would be like: food issues, lack of wind at sea, sickness, and savagery of the natives. The imagery given tells of a tale that you will not soon forget! And a thought...one slight change and the family I have now would be so very different. I also found myself learning facts about Louisiana of which I had no idea -- that was a pleasant surprise, and I am planning some future road trips to see just what I have missed! If you love history and love a great story of someone overcoming tremendous odds to start life anew, then this is a great story for you!

1729 The True Story of Pierre Marie Mayeux the Natchez Massacre and the Settlement of French Louisiana eBook Kenneth Myers Reviews

I had a copy and read it. Really informative. I got this copy for my sister Since we are directly related to Pierre & Marie Mayeux
The hazards facing those journeying to early 1700s Louisiana were numerous disease, neglect, floods, and unfriendly natives. This book tells a story of a representative couple that came to Louisiana and how they prevailed through these hardships. A journal of a soldier sent to the Natchez Post following the 1729 massacre is also included.

While understanding the setting for this story obviously required years of research, Ken's triumph is his ability to weave his research in without it interfering with his story. I heartily recommend the book to those interested in learning more about Louisiana's early pioneers.
Continuously interesting and captivating, the narrative makes the history of Pierre Mayeux come alive in a brutal time in Louisiana history. The story is well researched and written, and I did not want to put it down once I began reading it.
Still reading the book and I'm totally enjoying it. I love genealogy and what makes this book interesting to me is that Pierre & Marie Mayeux are my grandparents, I think 7x over. As I'm reading it I recognize names that I have come across in my research.
Amazing Book. Sensational labor of love by the author. It's an amazing story. Pierre and Marie should have died a thousand times. Absolute resilience by the characters and author.
Kenneth Myers has simultaneously written with intelligence and readability! History is about people and place. His book,1729, brings to life not only the harrowing story of our Mayeux ancestors, Pierre and Marie, but the history of Colonial Louisiana and the conditions therein. They simply do not teach this information in 8th grade Louisiana history! Amen! Had GOD not spared their lives and those of their children, we would not be chatting on Facebook today! We descend from their first born and only son, Francois. To say that this is nothing short of miraculous is an understatement! 2020 will mark 300 years since they left Maintenay, France, sailed out of La Rochelle on the ship Le Profond and arrived in French Colonial Louisiana. Amazing! Thank you Ken!
This book is the discovery of Bp Ken Myers about his ancestry. It is focused around Pierre and Marie and their life here in the newly formed Louisiana colony. It was a life filled with hardship and sometimes dangerous New World they came to seeking a new life together. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!!!
